The best things to do in Austin in October are the big festivals — Austin City Limits, the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, and Día de los Muertos — plus everything the first real fall weather opens up: swimming at Barton Springs, paddling Lady Bird Lake, the Congress Avenue Bridge bats, and long evenings on a South Congress patio. October is one of Austin’s two best-weather months, and the city knows it.
We’ve hosted October guests at SoCo Cottage, our 1937 Craftsman three blocks off South Congress in Travis Heights, for 14 years. This guide covers what’s still ahead for the rest of October 2026, and how to plan a future October around the festival weekends — for the best trip and the best value.
Is October a Good Time to Visit Austin?
Yes. October is one of the best months to visit Austin: the summer heat finally breaks, evenings turn cool, and the festival calendar is at its fullest. The trade-off is demand — ACL and F1 weekends bring the year’s highest rates, so timing matters.
The National Weather Service’s Austin climate normals show how fast the month cools off. The normal high is 87°F on October 1 and 77°F by October 31, with lows falling from 66°F to 56°F. That’s patio weather by day and light-jacket weather after dark.
It isn’t all sunshine. October averages close to 4 inches of rain, often arriving in a few heavy storms rather than long gray stretches. Pack a light layer and keep an outdoor plan B.
October 2026 in Austin at a Glance
Here are the dates that shape the month this year. If you’re reading this in mid-October, the second half of the list is still ahead of you.
Austin City Limits Music Festival: October 2–4 and 9–11, 2026, at Zilker Park (wrapped for this year — see planning tips below)
Formula 1 United States Grand Prix: October 23–25, 2026, at Circuit of the Americas
Viva la Vida Fest (Día de los Muertos): Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 4th Street and Congress Avenue
Austin Film Festival: October 29 – November 5, 2026
Halloween: Saturday, October 31, 2026
Austin’s Big October Events

October is Austin’s festival month: two marquee events, plus smaller cultural ones in between.
Austin City Limits Music Festival (Plan Ahead for Next Year)
ACL is Austin’s biggest music weekend — times two. The ACL Festival runs two identical weekends at Zilker Park, usually the first two weekends of October. The 2026 edition, its 25th, ran October 2–4 and 9–11.
If you’re planning a future October around ACL, book your stay as soon as the dates are announced. Lodging across the city books up fast, and the most walkable stays go first. Our approach: nine stages by day, a shaded deck and a quiet bed by night.
Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at COTA
The 2026 United States Grand Prix runs October 23–25 at Circuit of the Americas, southeast of downtown. Practice is Friday, qualifying is Saturday, and the race is Sunday afternoon.
Race weekend changes the whole city, even if you never go to the track. Restaurants fill, rates climb, and traffic toward the circuit backs up. Race-goers should check the circuit’s official transportation options well ahead.
Viva la Vida Fest for Día de los Muertos
Viva la Vida is Austin’s long-running Day of the Dead celebration, hosted by the Mexic-Arte Museum. The 2026 festival and parade — the 43rd — takes place Saturday, October 24, at 4th Street and Congress Avenue downtown.
Expect a grand procession, art, music, and food. It shares a weekend with F1, so plan your route downtown with that in mind.
Austin Film Festival
The Austin Film Festival runs October 29 through November 5, 2026, with screenings and panels across the city. It’s known as a writers’ festival, so the panels can rival the films.
Halloween in Austin
Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026. Sixth Street downtown typically closes to cars and turns into a crowded, loud, costume-packed street party.
If that’s not your scene, the low-key version works just as well: a costume-optional dinner on South Congress, then a walk home under the oaks.

Outdoor Things to Do in Austin in October

October is when Austin’s outdoor life comes back: the summer heat is gone, and the water is still warm enough to enjoy.
Swim at Barton Springs Pool
Barton Springs Pool is a spring-fed swimming hole in Zilker Park that holds an average temperature of 68–70 degrees year-round. On a warm October afternoon, it’s the most Austin thing you can do. Note that the pool closes on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for cleaning.
Paddle Lady Bird Lake
Rent a kayak or paddleboard and get out on Lady Bird Lake, the stretch of the Colorado River that runs through downtown. October mornings are calm and cool.
See the Congress Avenue Bridge Bats Before They Leave
Austin’s bat colony under the Congress Avenue Bridge numbers about 1.5 million at its summer peak. According to KUT’s guide to the bats, the colonies leave by November to head south for the winter, which makes October your last good window of the year. Go around sunset on a dry evening — the bridge sits at the north end of South Congress, a straight shot from the cottage.
Walk the Greenbelts and Parks
Fall is trail season. Closest to us, the Blunn Creek greenbelt trail and Little Stacy Park are both a short walk from the cottage — a favorite with families, and a quiet start to a morning. Farther afield, the Barton Creek Greenbelt offers longer hikes once temperatures drop.
Take a Hill Country Day Trip
October’s milder weather makes it a good month to leave the city for a day. Hamilton Pool Preserve is about 40 minutes west; reservations are required every day, and swimming is never guaranteed, so check its status before you go. Fredericksburg, about 1.5 hours away, is a fall favorite for wineries, and Gruene’s historic dance hall is under an hour south.
Fall on South Congress
South Congress is at its best in October. Patios fill again, the music moves outdoors, and the walk between coffee, shopping, and dinner is finally comfortable at any hour.
From our front door, it’s three blocks to the avenue. Our usual October loop: coffee at Jo’s, a long brunch at June’s All Day or Magnolia Cafe, an afternoon browsing the shops, and live music at the Continental Club after dark. Tiny Grocer and Neighborhood Sushi are close by when you’d rather eat in.
Guests say the location is what they remember most. As Ryan put it in September 2025, the cottage is “close enough to all the great parts of Congress Ave, while still feeling far enough away to remain peaceful and quiet.”
How to Plan Around October’s Festival Weekends
The secret to October in Austin is timing. The weather is great all month, but prices and crowds swing hard from one weekend to the next.
Book festival weekends early. ACL and F1 weekends are the most in-demand of the year. If you want one, lock in your stay as soon as the dates are set.
Aim for the gap. In 2026, the stretch between ACL’s second weekend and F1 (roughly October 12–22) brings the same fall weather with fewer crowds.
Consider November. You get nearly the same weather, thinner crowds, and post-festival value. It’s our quiet local pick.
Park once, walk everywhere. Event-weekend traffic is real. A walkable base means you can leave the car in the driveway and still reach coffee, dinner, and music on foot.
Reserve dinners ahead. On race weekend, popular restaurants book up early.
Where to Stay for an October Trip to Austin
In October, location does most of the work: walk to the action by day, come home to quiet at night.
That’s the reason people book SoCo Cottage. It’s a whole-home, three-bedroom, two-bath 1937 Craftsman on a quiet, oak-shaded street in Travis Heights, three blocks off South Congress. Inside, you’ll find a record player and vinyl, art on the walls, and a full kitchen for group breakfasts. Outside, the string-lit back deck is the spot for cool October evenings. As Mike wrote after his October 2024 stay, “Outside back deck is a shady retreat.”
The record backs it up: 4.97 stars across 296 reviews, a perfect 5.0 for location, Guest Favorite status in the top 5% of eligible Airbnb listings, and 14 years as a Superhost.
